What is the MQAP? | MQAP Website

The goal of the Microbicide Quality Assurance Program (MQAP) is to facilitate the development, standardization, and application of pre-clinical assays and analytic methodologies used in microbicide development. Interfaced with the Microbicide Research and Development Portfolio (MRDP), data collected from the testing of standardized MQAP materials is secured in a relational database, allowing ongoing analyses. The MQAP acquires, characterizes, and distributes quality control materials, reagents, and proficiency testing panels to participating laboratories. In addition, the program will supply pre-clinical microbicide quality assurance technical data to researchers.

One of the ways the MQAP is implementing standards of performance for existing and newly developed microbicide assays is through proficiency testing. By periodically sending each participating laboratory a coded (blinded to the lab) panel for each assay, performance of procedures is assessed by statistical comparisons of laboratory assay results to predetermined target ranges for that assay and its panel components. The MQAP identifies sources of variability or reasons for unsuccessful performance within a single laboratory and between participating laboratories. The laboratories are provided scored results for their proficiency panels, and technical assistance for correction of deficiencies. This process ensures consistency and reliability of assay research data, and allows for accurate comparison of assay results across laboratories.

Similar to the MRDP, the MQAP utilizes an interactive web-based data entry mechanism for direct submission of researcher proficiency testing panel results from automated assay systems, such as microtiter plate readers. This reduces introduction of transcription errors seen with manual data entry, while providing the researcher rapid feedback on proficiency testing results.

Participation in the MQAP proficiency testing is open to all investigators in the microbicide field who are currently using or plan to use the standardized pre-clinical assays validated by the MQAP. Please submit the “Proficiency Testing Registration” form (found on the MQAP website: [link]) to request participation in the program.
